Running for my life - Zombies Run 5K - Week Three

Over the last few years I have dabbled with running, every time using Six to Start's awesome Zombies Run and Zombies Run 5K app, each time I have failed miserably.  I would diligently go out and try my best but I think the most I managed to last was a month.  I have no willpower.

I am a failure.

But that is not the attitude and I don't know what is different this time, it could be the fact I have bought a decent sports bra and a hands free dog lead which FYI is the best thing ever.  These two simple things along with some spark inside me screaming at me to get going has led me back to Zombies Run 5K.

Zombies Run is excellent, the combination of story and exercise, ZR5K takes those same elements but puts you through 8 weeks (with three chapters/workouts a week) of turning your lack of running to a whole 5k of running.

Can I make it to week 8?  Well I thought if I posted to the internet my weekly progress it would help me get there.

So without futher ado, my thoughts on Week 1

ZR5K - WEEK 2

Defeated.

No I wasn't eaten by zombies, I melodramatically hit my imaginary wall.

Yep, I managed the first day of week 3, then I went all out on a new route on day 2, change of scenery and all but when I came to do day 3, smack, straight in to the wall.

Week 3 really ups the ante with a 5 minute walk followed by a 5 minute free form run.  Then five reps of 1 minute running followed by 1 minute walking then 10 seconds of knee lifts.  But that's not all then there was another free-form run for 8 minutes then 2 minutes if stretching then to finish it all of 8 minutes of yes you guessed it free-form running.

Twice I went out and twice I failed, to be honest I was really tired this week and I was a little gutted I couldn't do it, it was weird like my legs where heavy and tired, I was also a little scared that I actually wanted to run, what is wrong with me?!

Anyway on Tuesday it was a beautiful sunny evening and I thought fuck it, I'm going to try again, and I did it plus really enjoyed it, the sun was shining, the dog was behaving herself and nobody was about so I could sing along to my gangsta rap and cheesy dance tunes.

I am a little peeved that I fell by the wayside but I am by no means an Olympic athlete, what I have realised though is that if I am exercising more I need to look at what is going in to my body. Which sucks!

I am pleased though that I didn't just go "sod it" and give up which the Heather of old might have done.

I am also looking forward to the upcoming Zombies Run 5K update which promises a fresh lick of paint to the app.

This week I have been "motivated" by.......

REVIEW - Hell Divers by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Title: Hell Divers

Author: Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Publisher: Blackstone

Release Date: 19th July 2016

Source: Own Copy
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search for a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers: men and women who risk their lives by diving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

When one of the remaining airships is damaged in an electrical storm, a Hell Diver team is deployed to a hostile zone called Hades. But there’s something down there that’s far worse than the mutated creatures discovered on dives in the past—something that threatens the fragile future of humanity.
As you know I do love an end of the world apocalyptic novel and this one is set not just on the remaining wastes of Earth it is also set in the stormy skies above.

Many years after WW3 has ravaged the Earth what is left of the human race lives in giant ships that never land, they spend their lives flying above Earth hoping that one day they can find a place that isn't ravaged by time and radiation to set down and live their lives.

Keeping these ships in the air requires resources and those resources are to be found on the ground, the finding of those resources falls to the duty of the Hell Divers, a group of men and women who literally dive through the sky from the ship to the ground to scavenge for those all important parts that stop these massive airships meeting their maker.

Not a job for the faint of heart, Hell Divers are a tough bunch and their lives are about to get worse when one of the remaining airships in the sky runs in to difficulties above an area called Hades, the area is full of radiation, electrical storms and a horror on the ground which leaves our Hell Divers running for their lives.

Mutants, creatures that have a fleeting resemblance to humans roam the surface and they are bloodthirsty, they are also right in the way of the parts needed to keep the airship in the sky.

Hell Divers reminded me a little of I Am Legend but with more people and ships in the sky. Once again humanity is shown in the worst of lights as when the worst comes we don't always band together we split in to factions when we should work together.

This is a gritty, exciting read and the beginning of a series that explores this horrifying world and the few people left.  I found it fast paced and it does get you hooked in really quickly.  Definitely worth a read!

I've been watching.... #6 - Baywatch

I recently went to see this expecting the worse and coming away with a huge smile on my stupid face, it was ridiculous stupid far-fetched fun.

The Rock and Zac Efron make a great pairing as they go from life guards to private detectives as bodies pile up on their golden sands.  They are ably helped by some buxom beauties with brains (god I sound like a tabloid newspaper) and a token funny dude to find out if the local property magnate (who also happens to a stunning yet conniving woman) has blood on her hands.

It is daft as a brush, features a shed load of explosions, penis jokes and gratuitous boob wobbling but one thing for sure this film does not take itself seriously at all.

It won't win an Oscar but it will make you laugh, cringe, snigger and cheer (yay it's the Hoff!!), I have never been so vocal at a film ever!

The Sunday Post #61 - 9th July 2017

Welcome to my Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberley over at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer . Join me as I ramble about my week in and out of the blogosphere.

Not much to report, Scotland is hot one day and blowing a gale the next!  You know us Brits we love to complain about the weather.  Since my last Sunday Post I have been to the cinema twice which is unheard of for me, my first trip was to see Baywatch with the girls and I have a post coming up about that this week (spoiler alert - I loved it).  My second trip was to see those little yellow dudes the Minions in Despicable Me 3 which was 80's tastic!!

I have been reading a bit more and now have to get my finger out and write more reviews which I hope to get done this week.  I bought a super duper blog planner, a pic of said planner should be in my instagram pics up above, to help me stay organised and on track.

Talking of on track I totally hit a wall this week with my running but I have been very tired so am blaming that.

Last of all if you are looking for a new podcast I have added a link in my page bar for my favourite podcasts, I keep discovering more and more, the quality out there is fantastic!

Have a great week everyone!

Podcastastic #6 - The Tunnels Podcast

The day that I walked in to Night Vale was the day I fell in love with podcasts.

My phone how ever got pissed off quickly as it liked Angry Birds and I'd went and put it in the great recycle bin in the cloud to make way for episodes of quirky shows that me, the owner of said phone likes!

Anyway this week I've been listening to......

My name is Heather and I think I am getting addicted to finding creepy podcasts!! I have a huge list now of podcasts to work through (thank you Twitter peeps!) and this one has been hitting those creepy high notes.

It is docu-drama style, The Tunnels follow Robert who wants to find out more about the eponymous tunnels.  They are said to lie beneath the town of Griffin, Georgia and they are firmly embedded in urban legend.

They make up a huge underground network, one that is ripe and ready for investigating and ready to scare you - what is down there?

This is my cup of tea, it has a dark and mysterious underground setting ready to be explored, it has a creepy mental hospital, a prepper with a hidden agenda and a more besides.

Robert, our guide takes us through his journey ably and with no bravado just open eyes and a tape recorder.  You genuinely feel scared as he delves deeper.

Add this to your weekly pod subscriptions!

Running for my life - Zombies Run 5K - Week Two

Over the last few years I have dabbled with running, every time using Six to Start's awesome Zombies Run and Zombies Run 5K app, each time I have failed miserably.  I would diligently go out and try my best but I think the most I managed to last was a month.  I have no willpower.

So after week one I bounded on to week two, those zombies won't chase themselves you know.

This week I found easier, which was strange as I was running more, each workout had me doing a ten minute walk followed by 1 minute walk, 30 second run and 5 heel lifts that has to be repeated 5 times followed by a ten minute free form run.

The increase in running intervals crazily was a breeze to me (trust me when we go on to week 3 I will not be saying this), I don't know if it was the fact I was more relaxed about what I was doing or my downloading of some more uplifting tunes or the purchase of my shiny new proper jogging leggings complete with pocket in the back! Exciting, eh!?

Whatever it was, all the three workouts this week had me in such a good mood and on the last workout of week three I found myself continuously running for longer than I had before.  Dare I say I feel energised and ever so slightly smug.  I really felt like my fitness level was slowly improving.

Can I make to week 3?

Here is one of my "uplifting" songs, yes I have a thing for nineties rap!
